Combined Actors of Cambridge are staging The Ferryman by Jez Butterworth at the ADC from 28 April to 2 May 2026, with get in and tech on Sunday 26 April, and dress rehearsal on Monday 27 April.

It’s a powerful, sometimes gritty, play set in 1981 against the background of The Troubles in Northern Ireland. The storytelling is gripping and often visceral, and the ending is violent and shocking. The final scene includes two on-stage deaths, and will need an experienced Technical Director to manage the safety aspects while keeping the action realistic.

The action takes place over a single day in August, providing a Lighting Designer with opportunities depict an indoor setting with early morning and late night by candle- and lamplight, and an evening scene with sunset. Sound Design opportunities are . . interesting! and include recorded music, unaccompanied singing, a radio broadcast by Margaret Thatcher, and, finally, the screaming of banshees.
